Outdated Artist Talk

This is the "Outdated" (2023) post runway show Q & A artist talk, getting insights on each of these works from artists Alex Blom, Vero Silva, Marley Robinson, Emma Hunt, Adailia Lorson, and Syd Lee.

Beauty is Pain

2023

Recycled little boys pants, men’s pants, dye, beads, and clasps

In this anatomically incorrect depiction of a woman's body in decay, this piece references the history of medical malpractices against women, stemming from miseducation and gender biases advertised as beauty enhancements.

A Corset Does Not Confine

2023

Hard wood and embroidery thread

Utilizing the masculine material of scrapped hardwood as a symbol of the patriarchical oppression imbedded within the history of corsetry, used to confine women physically and mentally, I manipulated the wood by hand to actually comfortably shape my specific body, the corset meant to not confine, but instead to help support. The embroidery details in “feminine” color schemes, reference the delicate and dainty floral motifs found in womens lingerie. Using them juxtaposed against the wood, it defies this ideal of delicacy to display the immense strength of female bodies.

Eve’s Sin

2023

Recycled men’s corduroy work pants, button-up shirts, recycled beads, women’s underwear, beads, and dye

Like Eve was created from Adam’s rib, this gown uses traditional men’s workwear to create this floral and labial petticoat, laced with women’s panties, recollecting women’s historical role as creator of life and of clothing not often acknowledged.

T-t-t-t-t-tasty Tasty

2023

Recycled fabric, girls tutus, bonnet, lingerie, beads, and dye

The base used in this piece was a tutu I found which I could not decipher whether it was a childrens dance costume or lingerie. This piece celebrates and criticizes the ultra girly and the idea of sexy disguised as sweetness and deliciousness, perpetuated in girls' wear from a young age.

Idolize Villainize

2023

Reclaimed leather, denim, paint, wire, and metal charm

David Bowie’s infamous jumpsuit meets Buffalo Bill’s skinsuit in this piece, juxtaposing the highly acclaimed and idolized icon who pioneered androgyny, with the typical villainized depiction of transgender “madness”. These two extremes focus on common media representation of gender identity, accepted if fashionable but mental illness if not.
